Description Overview
Introduction
The e Vitara is Maruti Suzuki’s first series-production electric SUV and is sold through the NEXA network. It is unrelated in design and engineering character to the petrol Grand Vitara, offering two LFP battery options, front-wheel drive and a choice of Delta, Zeta and Alpha variants. Rather than chasing spectacular acceleration or oversized screens, it focuses on approachable performance, strong safety, useful range and the reassurance of Maruti’s widespread sales and service ecosystem.
Exterior Design
The e Vitara has a muscular, upright stance, with a high creased bonnet, blanked-off upper grille, Y-shaped LED DRLs and sculpted bumpers. Squared wheelarches, prominent rear haunches and thick body cladding create a rugged look, though the cladding may appear excessive to some buyers. All variants receive 18-inch alloy wheels with aerodynamic covers. It measures 4,275mm long and has a 2,700mm wheelbase, while concealed rear door handles and slim three-point tail-lamps add visual distinction. Dual-tone colours are restricted to the Alpha.
Interior & Comfort
The cabin is a considerable step forward for Maruti, combining an asymmetric dual-tone dashboard with a two-spoke steering wheel and neatly integrated displays. Physical climate switches and a rotary volume control make frequently used functions easy to access. The supportive front seats offer a relatively high driving position, although the raised battery floor creates a slightly knees-up posture. Alpha variants add front-seat ventilation and a 10-way powered driver’s seat. Rear legroom is generous, but tall occupants may find headroom and under-thigh support insufficient.
Build Quality
Published road tests describe the e Vitara as one of Maruti’s most premium-feeling products. The doors shut with reassuring weight, major controls feel substantial and the dashboard’s soft-touch section lifts the ambience. However, hard plastics remain in less prominent areas, while the gloss-black centre console is likely to collect fingerprints, dust and scratches. Its broad edge can also press against the driver’s left knee. The overall finish is convincing, even if it does not completely match the richer material variety offered by some rivals.
Engine & Performance
The 48.8kWh Delta uses a 144PS motor, while the 61.1kWh Zeta and Alpha produce around 174PS. Both develop 193Nm, drive the front wheels through a single-speed transmission and offer Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow modes. Acceleration is progressive rather than startling; an early media test recorded 0-100km/h in an indicative 9.25 seconds for the larger-battery version. Normal mode suits everyday driving, Eco feels restrained and Sport sharpens responses modestly. Mid-range performance is adequate for overtaking, but this is not aimed at performance-EV buyers.
Ride & Handling
Road-test feedback suggests a secure but somewhat firm setup. The steering is light in town, and the 5.2-metre turning radius makes the SUV easy to manoeuvre. Its low-mounted battery contributes to reassuring stability, although steering feedback is limited and body roll is noticeable when pushed. Sharp bumps and expansion joints can make the ride feel busy, with vertical and side-to-side movement reported on broken highways. It is more comfortable when driven calmly on smoother roads, but buyers expecting the traditionally soft ride of a family-focused Maruti should take a thorough test drive.
Range & Charging
Certified range stands at 440km for the 48.8kWh battery and 543km for the 61.1kWh unit. A 7.4kW AC wallbox takes approximately 6.5 hours to charge the smaller battery and nine hours for the larger one from 10-100%. With suitable DC equipment, both can charge from 10-80% in about 45 minutes. Early drives indicated roughly 7km/kWh in town and 4.8km/kWh on the highway, but a repeatable Indian real-world range test is not yet available. Battery preconditioning, scheduled charging and CCS2 rapid-charging compatibility are included.
Safety
Safety is a standout strength. Seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag, are standard, along with electronic stability control, all-wheel disc brakes, tyre-pressure monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, hill hold, multi-collision braking and ISOFIX mounts. The e Vitara achieved five stars in Bharat NCAP, scoring 31.49 out of 32 for adult protection and 43 out of 49 for child protection. Level 2 ADAS is exclusive to the Alpha, bringing adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive high beam.
Features & Technology
Equipment includes automatic climate control, rear AC vents, a PM2.5 filter, keyless entry, push-button start, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding mirrors and one-touch operation for every power window. Zeta adds conveniences such as wireless phone charging, while Alpha brings a fixed glass roof, ventilated front seats, powered driver adjustment, a 360-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS. Reviewers found the driver-assistance calibration progressive and unobtrusive, although the surround-view camera resolution is disappointing. There is no opening panoramic roof, dual-zone climate control or powered tailgate.
Infotainment
A 10.1-inch touchscreen sits beside a clear 10.25-inch digital instrument display. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, as are connected-car functions and the “Hi Suzuki” voice assistant. The software supports charger searches, route planning with charging stops, remote climate operation, charging schedules and live vehicle information. Some reviewers found the screen responsive, while others criticised its thick bezels and relatively modest size. Delta and Zeta have four speakers; Alpha receives an Infinity by Harman system with extra speakers and a subwoofer.
Space & Practicality
The 2,700mm wheelbase provides good rear legroom, and the rear bench can slide through ten positions, recline and split 40:20:40. This lets owners choose between passenger space and luggage room. Storage includes large door pockets, cupholders, a glovebox, front armrest storage and space beneath the floating console. The shallow boot is a clear weakness, however, and there is no frunk. A full-size 18-inch spare alloy wheel is unusually useful for an EV but consumes underfloor room. A separate tray stores the portable charging cable and tools.
Driving Experience
In everyday use, the e Vitara feels friendly and predictable rather than futuristic or intimidating. Smooth accelerator calibration makes stop-start traffic easy, while the larger battery provides enough flexibility for relaxed intercity journeys. Wind and tyre noise become more noticeable on concrete surfaces and at highway speeds. Regenerative braking offers several strengths, but changing the preset level requires the touchscreen while stationary, and there are no steering-mounted paddles. Regen Boost works well in slow traffic but can feel too strong on faster roads. Conventional braking is powerful and confidence-inspiring.
Pros
- Long certified range with the 61.1kWh battery
- Seven airbags and five-star Bharat NCAP rating
- Smooth, predictable performance
- Premium-feeling cabin and solid construction
- Flexible sliding and reclining rear seat
- Extensive NEXA and Maruti service network
Cons
- Small, shallow boot and no frunk
- Firm ride can feel unsettled on broken roads
- Limited rear headroom and under-thigh support
- Highway wind and tyre noise
- ADAS and premium comforts restricted to Alpha
- Regeneration settings are inconvenient to adjust
Verdict
The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara is best suited to first-time EV buyers who value safety, easy driving manners, credible range and access to a familiar service network. The Delta should work for predominantly urban use, while the 61.1kWh Zeta is the more balanced choice for regular highway travel. Alpha is necessary for ADAS, ventilated seats, premium audio and other flagship equipment. It is a sensible family EV overall, but buyers who frequently carry bulky luggage, seat tall adults in the rear or prioritise a plush ride should examine alternatives.
